Maine School Garden Intensive 2013

Maine School Garden Day 2013 was held at Troy Howard Middle School in Belfast early in May. On Friday, two Intensive Learning Sessions were held with over 40 participants. The first was a Greenhouse Intensive Workshop presented by Dr. Lois Berg Stack from the University of Maine, Orono and Dr. Kathy Murray from the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. Session 2 covered successful practices using Season Extenders and Unheated Hoop Houses given by Troy Howard's own agricultural coordinator, Jon Thurston.

On Saturday a full day of workshops, exhibits and networking was attended by over 80 educators and exhibitors. Topics included starting a school garden, seed saving, cooking with kids, planning to plant and lessons using the garden in your classroom. The weather was fantastic, our host site perfect, and educators finished with a new enthusiasm for their existing or proposed educational gardens.

Maine School Garden Day 2014 is already being planned at Medomak Valley High School. More details are coming in our webiste and E-newsletter.
